How Having Home Routines Can Save You Time

Updated: Apr 7

Happy Monday, everyone! I love Mondays, well most of the time. It's the start of a fresh week, and new opportunities. This Monday is also the first Monday of a new month, which is so very exciting.

This week, I want to share my home routines with you. Now, I'm not a paid housekeeper. And, like all of you, my life is very busy. I don't have time to clean for hours a day. I do what needs to be done that day, and move on. The way I get the most done in the least amount of time possible is by implementing cleaning routines.

Weekly Home Routines

Routines are helpful because instead of waiting until a room is really dirty to clean it, each room gets cleaned on the same day of the week. My weekly schedule looks like this:

Monday-Kitchen and Dining Room (microwave, oven, refrigerator, dusting light fixtures and cabinet wipe down).

Tuesday-Living room (washing blankets, cleaning under furniture, and dusting bookshelves and light fixtures).

Wednesday-Playroom (vacuuming, dusting light fixtures, and organizing toys as needed).

Thursday-Bathrooms (cleaning tub and toilets, wiping down cabinets, mopping, and dusting).

Friday-Bedrooms (vacuuming, dusting shelves and light fixtures, and washing bedding).

Saturday-Catch-up Day ( because we all get off track at least once throughout the week).

Sunday-Rest.

This is the schedule that works for me. Yours might look different. You might not think this is enough cleaning, or it might be too much in a given day. But it's your home and your routine. It has to work for you.

Daily Home Routines

My daily tasks include things like laundry, cleaning the litter boxes, sweeping and mopping the floors, tidying up throughout the day, doing dishes, making meals, and closing down the kitchen. I will also tell you I don't do many of the daily tasks. My husband does most of them, aside from tidying throughout the day. Since I work part-time, and I started my blog, cooking is about fifty-fifty as well.

Monthly Home Routines

What about the random tasks that need to be done, like washing windows and curtains, cleaning the carpets, and organizing closets? I do those things on rotation, about every three months. I divide my home into three categories: bedrooms, bathrooms, and main living spaces. Each one gets deep cleaned four times per year. Again, that might be too little, or too much for you. That's okay! Do what works for you.

Final Thoughts

I hope this gives you some ideas on managing your home. I want to reiterate: my goal is to share what works for me and provide some encouragement. I never want you to feel shame if your home doesn't have a routine, or you struggle with completing chores. We're all out here doing our best and winging it. A cleaner home doesn't make you a better person. At the end of the day, our kids won't remember if their home was always clean. They will remember the memories that made their house a home. All of us have had newborns, toddlers, depression, or busyness. I've had all of the above, usually more than one at the same time.

I hope you guys have a fantastic week, and remember your best is always good enough.
