How and Why I Use a Reading Journal

Updated: Apr 7

Not only do I love planning, I also love paper, pens, stickers. journals; anything to help me get my life together (for about five minutes, until I decide it no longer works). One of the ways I use a journal is for book reviews. I've tried a couple of different ones, and the premise is usually the same. You write down basic information about the book (there's usually 100 pages for them), such as title, author, page count, etc. You can include anything you want, but there's usually space for writing down thoughts and an overall rating. Kind of like the book reports we did as kids, but these are for us, and actually fun. You can find them in most bookstores and online, and they can be as fancy or simple as you'd like. You don't even have to purchase a pre-made journal. You can make your own in a lined, blank, or grid journal.

The one I'm currently using is by Cultivate What Matters. I promise I'm not sponsored. I just really, really love their products. Cultivate is one my favorite companies of all time. Anyway, back to the reading journal. First off, the cover is gorgeous. It's white, with florals and gold accents. I adore florals and gold accents.

The inside is where all the fun is though. The Cultivated Reading journal has a page for goal setting (how many books you'd like to read, what genres, etc), a reading habit tracker, a page to list your ever-growing "to-be-read" pile, and a fun page full of blank books you can color in as you read. There's a few other extras in the back including a reading bucket list, a book loan log, and favorite quotes.

The bulk of the journal is for the book review pages. I love how there's different ratings for craft, enjoyment, insightfulness, and overall. I've loved filling these in. It's very clean and simple, which is nice. You add color with pens and stickers if you'd like. Otherwise, it the perfect space to record your thoughts about the novel you just enjoyed (or didn't).

I hope this review was helpful, and if you have any questions, or have thoughts you'd like to share, feel free to send me a message and don't forget to subscribe!
