Conquering the Tuesday Blues: A Stay-at-Home-Mom's Guide

Updated: Jun 4

Have you ever heard of the "Sunday Scaries"? It's when you absolutely dread the end of the weekend. It's almost Monday, and after only TWO days of relaxation, it's time to get back to the weekly grind. Work, school, shuttling kids everywhere...my goodness. It's exhausting. This is also referred to as the "Monday Blues", which is not the title of this post. Why you ask? Because my weekend runs from Sunday to Monday: hence the "Monday Scaries" and the "Tuesday Blues". I wanted to title this post, "The Monday Scaries", but I thought that might be a little confusing. Maybe you would assume I'm scared of Mondays...which I'm not. Or maybe I am. It is the end, after all.

The end of what? As a stay-at-home-mom, my weekend is when my husband's weekend is. Tuesday through Saturday, we both work our booties off making money, caring for kids, cooking meals, and cleaning up endless messes. By the time Sunday gets here, we're more than ready for a break...Rob from his job and me from solo parenting 40 hours per week.

So, what do I do to make my Monday...er, Tuesday, better? I try to give myself something to look forward to. On Tuesdays, I typically meet up with a few moms at my friend Shea's house. We let our kids terrorize each other instead of us, and enjoy some much needed adult conversation while chaos ensues around us. We spend a good portion of our time refereeing fights between our toddlers, and some between siblings over video games. Overall, we have a good time and I'm never quite ready to go home. But, I must so we can get on with the rest of our day, which includes homeschooling, chores, and taekwondo practice.

Another thing I try to do is make sure I'm caught up any chores on Monday night. I want the laundry done, the grocery shopping done, and the house tided up--including every bedroom. Does this always happen? Of course not. Does it at least happen most of the time? Also, no. My goal is to be more consistent with our routines, and I know this one would help us all out immensely.

Speaking of routines, I also make sure my week is planned out before Tuesday. It's usually done by Sunday, because my planner starts on Mondays. I make sure I have all of our appointments and playdates scheduled, when we plan to fit school in that week, and when I plan to get my work hours in. Having a clear schedule helps me stay organized throughout the week, though I don't always follow it perfectly. I'm learning to have lots of grace in planning my days, and leave some white space for margin. But, more on that in another post.

Mondays are also our day to recharge. I usually go out shopping, or spend some time reading. Robert goes to play Magic: the Gathering at our local game store. Taking this time helps us be ready to take on the new week...well, as much as we can be anyway.

It's still a struggle, but doing these things helps us have a semi-smooth and productive week. It's not quite as tumultuous. Do you have any routines or activities that help you prepare for your week? Share them in the comments. I hope you all have a fantastic week, and as always, Happy Planning.
